Talk by Yasmin Zandomenico, Harvard U: "Portuguese for all: Nonbinary language and inclusiveness in the classroom" (in Portuguese).

This presentation aims to highlight the importance of adopting Portuguese non-binary forms to raise awareness of gendered linguistic bias and promoting welcoming learning environments. The integration of non-binary people into the learning community constitutes a human right, as misgendering creates educational obstacles. Teaching foreign language through a critical and inclusive approach allows students to equip themselves with fundamental language skills to claim and defend identities for themselves and others, especially when learning gender-based languages. Considering the growing literature on non-binary language in Portuguese (Auxland, 2020; Guimarães, 2020; Schwindt, 2020; Seidel, 2021; Gomes, 2022; Zandomenico, 2022; 2024), this presentation argues how inclusive pedagogy can unveil the language acts by which gender identities are constituted to appear normal or not normal, and thus welcomed or marginalized. Moreover, it describes a pedagogical intervention for non-binary teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) and its results.

This talk will be in Portuguese; Zoom option available: https://umassd.zoom.us/j/99440977332
