Engaging with Literature from Other Nations: Student Perspectives in Brazil and the U.S.

Visiting Scholar Prof. Neuda Lago will discuss a study that investigates learners' experiences with literature from countries outside their own. The findings underscore the challenges and positive outcomes encountered by non-native readers, illustrating the emotional and intellectual impacts of their literary engagement with unfamiliar contexts. In this presentation, she will share insights from her research conducted with university students in the U.S. and draw comparisons with their counterparts in Brazil. Neuda Lago is a Professor of English Literature at the Federal University of Gois (UFG) in Goinia, Brazil. Her research focuses on English literature and the inter-semiotic relations between cinema and literature. She holds a PhD in Language and Literature from UFG, complemented by specialized training in Literary Criticism at the University of Oxford, England. At her home institution, she advises post-doctoral, doctoral, master's, and undergraduate research. Prof. Lago is currently a Visiting Scholar at UMass Dartmouth.
